After our regular commute to the Mall we started went back to the National Gallery of Art to finish the 19th century painters, mostly The Impressionists and the Exhibit “Corot: Women”. I love the impressionists and we saw some very good ones. Jean Baptiste Camille Corot (1796-1875) is renowned for landscape paintings and we saw a couple of them. The paintings of Corot’s women were almost all done in his studio and were rarely seen during his lifetime. But these works made an impact on later 19th and early 20th century modernist artists such as Paul Cezanne, Pablo Picasso and George Braque. Check out the photos but remember a camera can’t quite relay the colors and therefore the real beauty of a painting.
After the National Gallery of Art we walked to the National Portrait Gallery. Diane wanted to see Michelle Obama’s portrait and it was gorgeous. We saw other portraits that were interesting including the 4 female Supreme Court Justices.
Across the street from the National Portrait Gallery is the National Spy Museum. It cost $39.00 to get in so we just went into the Spy Store. After that we worked our way to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum which was fun. After that it was time to trek back to the Gauthier’s for dinner.
We hit a ton of traffic getting back to the Gauthier’s after getting off the Metro train but we made it to their place at about 6:45 pm. Toni had prepared lentil soup and a salad for dinner. Just as we were setting down and Charlie was about to open a bottle of wine they got a phone call from the Oakton Wine Shop and Bistro. It was Lisa, Bryan’s girlfriend on the phone explaining to Charlie that an elderly women had just driven her car through the front window of the shop. Bryan wanted Charlie to get some plywood and help him secure the shop. Well, Charlie didn’t get any wine, soup or salad but the three of us did as we waited to hear about the damage to the shop. Luckily it nobody was hurt inside the restaurant and Charlie and Bryon had the window boarded up by 10:00 pm.
