We got up had coffee and made our way to Amicon Falls. The falls were in the state park and just around the corner from our campsite. The Amicon Falls consist of two very close together falls. The falls were nice and hardly anybody was there but we were surprised by the color of the water. The water looked like a Thai iced tea, redish-brown. We learned that the area is heavy with iron thus the color of the water. It had rained a lot the day before and all the creeks and rivers were pouring Thai iced tea into Lake Superior. Check out the pictures.
After visiting Amicon falls we were on our way to the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park. Diane had picked a very scenic route to our next campground near the Porcupine Mountains. We started out on US Hwy 2 east then took a county road to Lake Nebagamon then it was a 3 or 4 more county roads to get into the Chequamegon National Forest. There were quite a few lakes on this little excursion that weren’t identified on our map. We drove through the town of Clam Lake then drove around Namekagon Lake before driving back to US Hwy 2.
From there we stayed on US Hwy 2 into Ashland and then rejoined the southern coast of Lake Superior until we were almost in Michigan. Once in Michigan we were on Hwy 2 for a little while then onto State Hwy 28 to Bergland then north to Silver City and our campground.
The Union River Campground was across the street from Lake Superior and in a grove of trees. It was a beautiful campground with views of the lake from most campsites. When we got there the campground was empty. It turned out that they had unseasonably heavy rains during the Labor Day weekend and the Tuesday after and campers left in droves. I’m talking about a 60 plus campsite campground empty. The campground manager told us to pick our campsite because most of them were still soaked. After looking at about 15 sites we found one that was still wet, but had drained, and we were sleeping in the van and all we cared about was not getting the van stuck in the mud. It was great have the restroom and showers to ourselves.
We had a couple of beers and Diane made another fantastic dinner. We watched the sunset it was beautiful.
