In the morning we stopped in Ketchum. Diane wanted to book a campsite near the Grand Teton National Park and Jackson for four days so we could explore both the Grand Teton and Yellowstone Parks during the week. She found a RV Campground in Alpine, Greys River Cove RV Campground. So off we went to Alpine.
It was still smoky as we continued south on State Hwy 75 then east on US Hwy 20 and into Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. Crates of the Moon is a combination of desert and volcanic rock. Some of the volcanic rock has solidified in unusual forms. Very interesting. Then it was off to Idaho Falls for lunch and supplies. After a minimal time in the big city it was on to US Hwy 26 where we ran into the Snake River again, around the Palisades Reservoir into Wyoming and Alpine.
The Greys River Cove RV Campground is on the north side of Alpine and is basically a square piece of property. The campground manager, Jack, let us have a spot in the northeast corner where normally is just vehicle storage. We are situated between a gigantic RV and some other trucks that aren’t used regularly, probably the most private spot in the campground. Our site faces north and the not so small foothills of the Grand Tetons. The Greys River dumps into the Palisades Reservoir about 200 yards from our campsite. Still a little smoky here but a very beautiful spot.
After we set-up the tent and got everything in order we had a couple of beers and Diane cooked a delicious broccoli and rice dinner and we were happy campers.
I think the real craters of the moon must be prettier than the ones in ID.
I remember being unimpressed as a child.
Did you go to Salmon, ID? That’s my maternal family’s home town.
