A bit of breakfast, a bit of packing the van, photos and goodbyes we were off to wash the van before heading to the coast. There is a nice self serve car wash in Red Bluff. The van was pretty dirty after over 2 weeks on the road. We pulled into a stall put our $5.00 into the machine and started to presoak the van when I accidently sprayed Diane who was holding Slinky. Slinky immediately freaked out, jumped out of Diane’s arms and the halter simultaneously and sprinted off with Diane in pursuit. Slinky ran over to the drive through automatic wash which of course was in the process of washing a car and she ran through the soap and water with Diane still in pursuit until Diane cornered her on the other side. Lesson learned, we will leave Slinky in the car next time we wash the car.
Hwy 36 that runs through Red Bluff and ends in Fortuna at Hwy 101 has been closed for a few months because they are straightening the road around Buck Mountain. Part of this road used to be my bus run for a couple of years and it was quite the winding road, but also very pretty. So it was off to Redding to Hwy 299 and over to Arcata on Hwy 101. Parts of the drive we could see the North Fork of the Trinity River and closer to the coast the North Fork of the Mad River, picturesque.
We reserved a campsite yesterday at the Azalea Glen RV Park at Patrick’s Point so that’s where we were headed until I suggested that we drive into Arcata and stop by Mazzotti’s on the plaza to get a signature Spinach Pie, to go, for dinner and buy a bottle of wine to enjoy at Azalea Glen. There was no discussion. We were on our way to Mazzotti’s. When we lived in Humboldt County it was always a treat to get a Spinach Pie, basically a calzone stuffed with spinach, zucchini, lots of garlic and just the right amount of ricotta and Mozzarella. Yum!
It was a nice evening sitting by a fire. We climbed into bed satisfied.
What a movie scene–chasing Slinky into an operating carwash!!
I would laugh out loud, but I can imagine how freaked out she was. Diane, too, for that matter!!
Next time, don’t spray the cat, Doug!! LOL
I am just thankful that you were able to get Slinky back…that must have been terrifying! On our trip we thought we had lost our dog Meisha when we were at Crazy Horse in S. Dakota…luckily she just got frightened by the fireworks show and climbed up almost totally under the dash and heater in the truck. My heart just sank I was so scared. She seems to be a happy camper now! I hope she’s enjoying the coast now.
